History of the Super Bowl
The Super Bowl is by far the largest sporting event throughout North America, but especially in the United States. The Super Bowl is the championship football game played in late January to early February that attracts over 200 million viewers worldwide. It pits the NFC and AFC team leaders against one another in a match that has become one of the best sporting venues of all time.
Originally there were two leagues the National Football League (NFL) which had been around for some time and was well established. Then there was the American Football League (AFL) which actually started in 1960 and was a faster more intense kind of football that people were starting to love. This prompted a challenge between the two leagues, with a final game to be played at the end of a year to see who was the best, and low and behold the Super Bowl was born.
For the first few years of this football showdown it wasn’t referred to as the Super Bowl. It is said that the name came from the Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt, who thought it up after seeing his kids play with a toy called a “super ball” and the name stuck!
